Elsa Muller

Born in 1993 in Trèves (Germany), based in Lyon (France).

Somewhere between archaeological rigor and incongruous wandering, Elsa Muller's practice seeks to reveal the aberrations of our digital environments and social interactions. An artist-explorer, she probes the wilderness of the internet in search of anomalies, forgotten remnants, unusable and unexploited images. Traces of an uncanny sociability, they are then manipulated and reintroduced into a highly formalized series of works. Elsa Muller plays with overuse of subjects and repetition of stylized forms, reflecting the extreme saturation of digital meanderings. Cows in virtual pastures, video game marathoners, conquering fathers: the figures she summons belong to a certain vernacularity, made unsettling by the artistic process. Their triviality becomes suspicious, their presence critical. In both painting and video, spaces are straightened up, images standardized, filled with vivid color fields. A pictorial ode to marginalized urban pigeons, icons of resilience, implicitly raises fundamental questions: What remains of artistic and political utopias? What is the place of the artist in a society in crisis, disillusioned, flooded with prefabricated narratives? Refusing resignation, Elsa Muller proceeds through shifting strategies, occupying the gap opened up by the absurd, where there is still potential for disruption.
