Waheeda Baloch

Born in Mirpur Khas (Pakistan) in 1977, based in Jamshoro (Pakistan) .

Waheeda Baloch, Professor in Art & Design at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro (PK), cultivates a curatorial practice informed by research, language, and a meticulous and sensitive attention to the intricate links between individual stories and systemic dynamics. As curator of the 2024 Karachi Biennale (KB24), she developed Rizq | Risk, a project that explored the complex and reciprocal relationships between food, sustainability— both ecological and socioeconomic—and cultural heritage. In Urdu, the term "rizq" encompasses the idea of sustenance, that which nourishes the body and keeps the spirit alive, enabling life. The artists of KB24 have invested in the tensions and urgencies that inhabit these societal issues, the Risk to which they are subjected, in a world where crops are destroyed by climate disasters, land monopolized and impoverished by agro-industry, and individual narratives swallowed up in the mass of globalization.

From colonial policies to community resistance, from capitalist violence to the survival of vernacular wisdom, Waheeda Baloch examines the material, cultural, and symbolic circulations of food. At the crossroads of political ecology, decoloniality, and intersectional feminism, she conceives curatorial practice as a critical mean capable of challenging hierarchical modes of subsistence and knowledge production. Her approach emphasizes methodologies rooted in slowness and care, which aim to be sustainable and inclusive. She imagines alternative cartographies for food justice, where sharing, memory, and poetry become political tools. Art intertwines with the fields and the voices of those who feed the world, celebrating cultural syncretism as a form of resistance.
