The residency

Artistes en résidence (Clermont-Ferrand, France) and Homesession (Barcelona, Spain) are offering a two-month research and creative residency at Homesession in Barcelona for an artist living and working in France, regardless of age, nationality and/or qualifications.

Homesession

Since 2007, Homesession has been supporting creation in the field of contemporary art through an open residency program for international artists, production support initiatives for Spanish artists, and an educational program: Polaritats. In a continuous effort to support artists and promote their work, Homesession welcomes a wide range of media and practices, fostering interdisciplinary experimentation and making room for the unexpected. To promote the mobility of Spanish artists, Homesession has been running an exchange program since 2014 with THis Studio (England), art3 (France), Belgrade Air (Serbia), Aquila Reale (Italy), L’Écart (Quebec), and, starting in 2023, with Artistes en résidence (A·R) (France).

Residency setting

At Homesession, the accommodation is a mezzanine space above the studio (photos here). The artist is the only person accommodated in these premises, and the Homesession team has its offices in a different location in the city of Barcelona. Although the team is present to accompany the artist, a certain degree of autonomy is required. It is advisable to be fluent in Catalan, Spanish or English to take full advantage of the residency.

Artistes en résidence

Created in 2011 in Clermont-Ferrand, A·R is a non-profit organization which supports contemporary creation by organizing residencies for artists and researchers in contemporary art. We support the international mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas and know-how, through the development of a vast network of local, national and international partners.

A·R understands residencies as a period entirely dedicated to research and experimentation, with no obligation to produce. This orientation intends to provide artists with the necessary time for qualitative and in-depth research, to promote a real immersion in the territory and to allow all the trial and error, detours and critical questioning necessary for the development of their art practice.

Although this call concerns the residency with our partners at Homesession in Barcelona, the A·R team remains available to the artists and provides ongoing support throughout their residency through regular exchanges.

Period of residency

The period of residency of the artist from France in Barcelona is scheduled from 1st of October to 30th of November 2026.

The artist selected for the Barcelona residency will receive :

  • A residency grant of €3,000 from A·R.
  • A production budget of €500 from A·R (paid in one go or reimbursed upon presentation of invoices).
  • Travel expenses between home and Barcelona paid by A·R.
  • 25 square metres of accommodation.
  • A 35 square metres workshop, equipped with power tools.
  • Curatorial support from the Homesession team.
  • The opportunity to present their work at Homesession at the end of their residency. As the residency is based on research, this public presentation is not an obligation. If there is a presentation, a €300 production budget will be added from Homesession.

Elements to provide for the application :

  • Completed application form available at the bottom of this page.
  • A PDF compiling artist statement, CV and a selection of relevant works (max 30 pages and 5MB).

In their note of intent, artists can highlight current research, their expectations about how the program will expand their existing body of work and/or enhance their professional development, their need for a studio or paid working time, their link to or interest in the territory, or any other reason that explains their desire to apply.

The deadline for applications is 11th January 2026, 23h59 french hour.

The selection committee is composed of the teams from A·R and Homesession, as well as former residents of the program.

As the jury is French-speaking, portfolios and statements of intent may be written in French.

One artist will be selected. The selection criteria include the quality of the artistic work, the clarity of the presentation of the practice, the relevance of the practice to the context of the residency, and the benefits the artist may gain from the residency.
