About Nýlistasafnið (Nýló)

Nýlistasafnið - The Living Art Museum was founded in 1978 by a group of artists and is therefore one of the oldest museums and exhibition spaces in Europe under the supervision of artists. The Living Art Museum has been one of the main venues for contemporary art in Iceland and has a unique collection of works by Icelandic and international artists from the 1960s to the present day.

The Living Art Museum's exhibitions began in the early 1980s, and many exhibitions have marked time limits in Icelandic art history. Every year, the museum presents a strong exhibition program as well as being a venue for various events, museum education and research, in close collaboration with artists, curators, scholars and the general public.

The Living Art Museum's collection includes over 2,200 works donated by artists, representatives, collectors and individuals associated with the museum. Today, Nýló's collection reflects the main movements in contemporary art and the museum's interest in asking and answering current questions.
Nýlo´s team consists of the director, the general manager and the collections manager. The team will connect the artist to local artists and art professionals. The team welcomes the artist to Nýló´s exhibition space and also to the collection if there is interest in research. The team will also give advice on subjects related to artistic interests and invite the artist to events connected to the Nýló´s exhibition program.

About SÍM

SÍM Residency is an international residency for visual artists located in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is run by SÍM—Samband Íslenskra Myndlistarmanna (The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists), a non-profit organization. The main objective of the residency is to provide a venue for international artists to engage with the Icelandic art scene, thereby creating a broader context within which local and international artists can experience their work and build new networks.

SÍM currently operates two residency locations:

  • Hafnarstræti, in downtown Reykjavík, houses the SÍM Gallery, office, and Guesthouse for short networking or research residencies.
  • Korpúlfsstaðir, located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, has SÍM Exhibition hall – Hlöðuloftið, a meeting room, 40 private studios for members, and the SÍM Residency apartment for residencies lasting from one up to three months.

For this residency, SÍM will initially welcome the selected artist to its Korpúlfsstaðir premises for September 2025. Candidates should note that this space is located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, in a remote situation that offers the opportunity to fully focus on research and production. It allows encounter and exchange with other artists in residency but only few larger networking opportunities. The city center is reachable by bus (approx. 45 minutes of travel, only a few buses a day).
From October 1 to 15, 2025, the artist will be hosted in the Guesthouse at Hafnarstræti in the city center of Reykjavík. During this second period, the artist will have the opportunity, if desired, to conduct a paid workshop at the Alliance Française de Reykjavík and/or present their work at Nýlistasafnið - The Living Art Museum.

Each month, the residency program hosts seven international artists.

About Artistes en résidence

Created in 2011 in Clermont-Ferrand, Artistes en résidence (A·R) is a non-profit organization which supports contemporary creation by organizing residencies for artists and researchers in the field of contemporary art. A·R supports international mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas and skills through the development of a vast network of local, national and international partners.
At A·R, residencies are considered as a time entirely dedicated to research and experimentation with no obligation to produce. The goal is to provide artists with the necessary time for qualitative and in-depth research, to promote a true immersion in the residency context, and to allow for trial and error as well as critical questioning necessary for the development of artistic practices.
A·R’s team offers mentorship to artists and provides contacts of various art professionals, researchers, artisans or any other person who can contribute to the development of their practice.
